Group studio yoga classes are only one way to experience the benefits of yoga. Many people opt for the privacy and one-on-one interaction of private yoga sessions. I have had students for group classes take privates with me to focus a particular area of their practice. I have also had wives buy private yoga lessons for their husbands to introduce them to yoga. The reasons are varied and many.
injury recovery - one of the most common reasons people take private lessons is therapeutic: to recover form an injury. Because private yoga sessions are personalized for each student we can focus on your specific concerns. Physical injuries which can benefit greatly from yoga include back pain, neck strain and knee injuries.
studio shyness - not everyone feels comfortable in a group class. If you are a yoga neophyte, doing down dog or a warrior two pose might make you feel self conscious; you are unfamiliar with the terms and feel awkward in the pose. With private yoga instruction you can learn the basics much faster to the point where you would be comfortable in a group setting. In addition, and more importantly with one-on-one instruction you will focus on developing the proper alignment in your poses from the beginning.
deepen your yoga practice - many students take private yoga sessions to deepen their yoga practice. While this may mean a focus on more advanced asanas, it can also include studying yoga philosophy as it relates to the self. We delve into the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita and the role Karma plays in our lives.
scheduling conflicts - work and family issues can make it difficult for you to attend regular studio classes. Private yoga classes allow the flexibility to schedule at your convenience be it early in the morning, a lunchtime break or after work.
